From September 1 - 30, our Critical Illness insurer, CHUBB, will accept applications for Guaranteed Issue Optional Critical Illness coverage of up to $25,000. Applications will be accepted without the requirement of medical evidence.

We encourage you to consider your family’s needs and personal situation when contemplating optional Critical Illness coverage. A major illness could have a debilitating effect on a person’s life and could potentially translate into huge medical costs that leave a family struggling to meet daily expenses. In such situations, Critical Illness insurance provides financial security for both medical treatment and for supporting your family. While disability policies cover lost income due to an accident or illness, Critical Illness insurance policies pay a lump-sum tax-free benefit in the event you are diagnosed with a serious, life-altering illness or condition, and survive a certain amount of days.
Applications for guaranteed issue optional coverage will be accepted until September 30, 2018. The application form is available for midwives and employer plan member groups. Please mail, fax, or email your completed application to:

AOMBT benefits plan insurer, Equitable Life, has launched a series of video guides designed to help plan members make the most of the benefits plan. There are short videos to help you register for the Equitable Life site, submit banking information for direct deposit of benefits claim reimbursements, and submit benefit claims. As part of the annual benefits plan renewal process, the Benefits Trust works with Equitable Life to negotiate premium rates for the upcoming year based on our group's claims experience, claim trends, Equitable's expenses for administering the plans, and their required insurance reserves. As a result of this year's negotiations, benefit premiums will be increasing for all plan member groups, effective August 1, 2018. Premium calculators were sent by email in July; contact us to request a calculator for your plan member group.
The AOMBT Trustees continually strive to achieve a balance between reasonable monthly premiums and providing a comprehensive benefits plan that meets the needs of our plan members. Recognizing the importance of minimizing the impact of increasing premiums, containing costs, and maximizing the amount of benefits funding midwives are able to contribute to retirement savings, Trustees made the decision to implement the following changes to our benefit plans.
Effective September 1, 2018:
- Coverage for Basic Dental Services reduced to 90%
- Reimbursement for Paramedical services for eligible dependents (spouse/partner and children) reduces to 80%.
The decision to implement these cost-sharing changes was made after careful review of plan utilization, plan member survey results, and group benefits plan standards.

The AOM Benefits Trust is pleased to announce that Krista Fairles was acclaimed as a Trustee following an open nominations process in February. Krista is a recent MEP graduate from Ryerson University with 30 years of experience in finance. Before entering midwifery, Krista trained and worked as a molecular biologist at the Universities of Guelph and Calgary, giving her a strong foundation in analytical thinking that she applies to both midwifery and finance. Krista is completing her New Registrant year at Midwifery Care of North Don River Valley, where there is a strong commitment to sharing time and skills with the broader community.
We also wish a fond farewell to our departing Trustee, Otis Kryzanauskas. Otis joined the Trust in 2015, bringing with him a keen interest in learning the full scope of the Trustee role. Otis made valuable contributions to the sustainability of midwifery both as a Trustee and as a member of the Finance & Audit Committee. Thank you Otis! The Member Information Report is an important financial planning tool for midwives. It reflects your total benefits funding and shows how these funds were allocated to the various components of the benefits plan. 2017 reports were mailed earlier this week, along with any applicable receipts and tax slips. Contact the AOMBT if you have any questions about your MIR.
Group Retirement Savings Plan receipts are mailed by Desjardins Financial. Receipts for contributions from March to December 2017 were mailed in January, and the receipts for the first 60 days of 2018 were mailed earlier this month.
