Live Well: Fighting off Fever

Wellness

You can catch respiratory illnesses at any time of year, but flu, RSV, and Covid are especially common in the winter. One of the top tools to keep on top of illness and soothe a sore throat is water.

Water for prevention

Colder temperatures and the subsequent dry air (both indoors and out) can weaken your nasal immunity.  Staying hydrated on a regular basis can help keep your immune system working at its most efficient.

Good hand hygiene is another easy way to reduce the transmission of illness. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Water to soothe your symptoms

Illnesses which have symptoms like fevers or gastrointestinal distress can cause dehydration, which will make you feel worse and take longer to feel better. Drinking lots of water can help manage your body temperature too!

Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Herbal teas or traditional home remedies like soup can help as well. Avoid drinking liquids that might have the opposite effect, like those containing caffeine or alcohol (check this article on Dialogue for tips on how to swap your coffee or tea for something healthier).

Gargling with warm salt water is a great way to soothe your sore throat and ease coughing. You may also consider other natural remedies, like honey, lemon and ginger in hot water.

Using a humidifier or inhaling steam can go a long way in helping you clear your airways and breathe better. If you don’t have a humidifier, try running a hot steamy shower.
