Live Well: Get Outside

September 26, 2025

Wellness

Even if mobility issues prevent you from enjoying active transportation, just getting out in nature can provide a big mental health boost.

The Canadian Psychology Association says that “Nature-based experiences can improve cognitive, psychological, and physical health” in a variety of areas, including restoring attention and ability to concentrate, improving mood and self-regulation, reducing symptoms of stress, and improving our sense of social connection.

They include “everything in the natural physical environment” as nature—whether that’s spending time outside in the mountains or looking out a window at a lake. Even being near potted plants indoors, looking at pictures or listening to nature sounds can have a positive impact.

A few ways to introduce more nature into your life this fall:

  • Spend your break time outside—go for a short walk, or enjoy your lunch in your back yard.
  • Take a moment to really notice the flowers, trees, or animals around you when you go outside.
  • Add plants to the indoor spaces where you spend most of your time, and open your curtains to let in natural light.
