Optional Insurance

Every family is different, and you may decide you need extra insurance coverage, in addition to the basic insurance coverage provided by the plan. You are responsible for the monthly cost (premiums) for any optional insurances you decide to purchase. Premiums are deducted from your pay.

Optional life

Optional life insurance is available for both plan members and your eligible spouse or partner. You can purchase optional life insurance in units of $10,000, up to a maximum of $250,000. Coverage may be contingent on providing evidence of insurability.

Optional accidental death and dismemberment

Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) are available for plan members, your eligible spouse or partner, and your children. The amount paid depends on the severity of the injury. Coverage may be contingent on providing evidence of insurability.

Optional critical illness

Critical illness coverage (CI) is available for plan members, your eligible spouse or partner, and your children. Guaranteed Optional CI coverage is available in units of $5,000, up to $25,000 (without medical evidence) or up to $150,000 (subject to approval based on medical evidence). Coverage can also be purchased for children ($5,000 or $10,000).

Critical illness coverage can help you worry less about unexpected expenses and focus on your return to health. The payment is not taxable and can be used in whatever way you wish. It is intended to help offset your loss of income and the often unexpected expenses that you may face following the diagnosis of a critical condition, like childcare costs, assistive devices or specialized medical equipment, travel, parking or accommodation costs, home renovations to accommodate medical needs, or time off for your family members.
